First published in 1897, this novel is told through diaries, letters, and newspaper cuttings. The English solicitor Jonathan Harker travels to a castle in Transylvania to close a property deal with Count Dracula and finds himself a prisoner of a vampire who then ships earth-filled boxes to England. In Whitby and London, Harker's fiancee Mina, her friend Lucy Westenra, the alienist Dr Seward, the Dutch professor Van Helsing, and others confront a series of attacks and unexplained deaths. They organise a pursuit that leads back toward Eastern Europe. The book is an epistolary horror novel about an ancient predator loose in a modern, documented world.
