First published in 1881, this novel is set at a small country school run by the forceful Dr Jeffrey Wortle. His best assistant, Mr Peacocke, and Peacocke's wife become the target of rumour when it appears that her earlier American marriage may still be valid because her first husband may be alive. Wortle refuses to dismiss them on gossip alone. The plot moves between the school, local clerical society, and a journey to America to settle the facts. The conflict is one of reputation, charity, and the damage a possible bigamy can do in a closed community that lives by appearances.
