First published in 1886, this novella follows the London lawyer Gabriel Utterson as he tries to understand the tie between his friend Dr Henry Jekyll and a smaller, violent man named Edward Hyde. Hyde tramples a child, later murders Sir Danvers Carew, and seems able to vanish into Jekyll's house and laboratory. Utterson, the doctor Lanyon, and Jekyll's servants circle locked doors, a will, and a series of letters. The story is a mystery of identity and appetite: a respectable physician has found a chemical means of splitting what he takes to be his virtuous and vicious selves, and he cannot keep the experiment in hand.
