This twelve-volume series, assembled under Felipe Fernández-Armesto, reprints major narrative histories so that they form a continuous account of England from Roman Britain to the year 2000. Individual volumes treat Roman occupation, Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, the medieval realm, Tudor and Stuart revolutions, the eighteenth century, industrial and Victorian society, the Edwardian years, the era of the two world wars, and the second half of the twentieth century. Authors include Sheppard Frere, G.R. Elton, G.M. Trevelyan, Roy Porter, A.J.P. Taylor, and others. The set is not one historian's thesis but a relay of period studies covering politics, society, and, in later volumes, the welfare state and decline of empire.
