Synopsis

In Tokyo in 1984, two strangers begin to occupy a slightly altered world they come to call 1Q84. Aomame, a fitness trainer who also works as a hired killer for a women's shelter, steps off an expressway and notices two moons in the sky. Tengo, a mathematics teacher and unpublished novelist, is hired to rewrite a strange manuscript by a teenage girl linked to a secretive religious commune. Their stories run in parallel and then converge as the Little People, a cult's doctrine, and a private detective tighten around them. The book is a long speculative novel about coincidence, coercion, and whether two people can recognise each other across a bent reality.
