First published in 1933, this narrative recounts stretches of poverty in two cities. In Paris the narrator works as a plongeur in hotel kitchens, lives in a cheap hotel with other down-and-outs, and describes the hierarchy of the restaurant trade. In London he tramps between spikes and tea shops, wears the official clothes of a destitute man, and records the rules that keep casual wards and beggars in motion. Companions include Boris the waiter and Paddy the tramp. The book is a first-person social report, not a novel of invented plot and not a restaurant guide.
