First gathered in this illustrated form in 1911, this is a collection of eight Wells stories paired with photogravures. The title piece concerns a successful politician haunted by a garden door he entered as a child and cannot find again on the same terms. Companion stories include a planetary collision, a dream of future war, a killing at an ironworks, a fable of a magic suit, a man who claims to make diamonds, a dynamo worshipped as a god, and a sighted climber stranded in a blind mountain valley. The pieces mix scientific romance with social and psychological fable. There is no continuous plot binding the eight.
