First collected in 1971, these five long stories place English travellers and professionals in situations where grief, sex, or experiment slips their control. The title story follows a married couple in Venice after the death of a child, among canals, a pair of elderly sisters, and a figure in a hooded coat. Other pieces set a schoolmaster among forgeries and menace on Crete, a young actress on an Irish errand that exposes a family secret, tourists on a Jerusalem Holy Week procession, and a scientist in a remote laboratory concerned with death and communication. The mode is contemporary unease rather than period romance. There is no continuous plot across the volume.
