Issued in two parts in 1605 and 1615, this Spanish novel tells how a minor gentleman, his head turned by romances of knight-errantry, restyles himself Don Quixote and leaves his village to right wrongs. Sancho Panza, promised an island, rides with him on a donkey. Their encounters with muleteers, galley slaves, a puppet show, and a ducal household that has already read about them test the knight's code against hunger, blows, and ridicule. Between adventures the book discusses authorship, translation, and a rival sequel. The work is a long comic narrative whose subject is a man who tries to live inside fiction while the world answers in prose.
