First published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, this novel follows Alonso Quixano, an ageing gentleman of La Mancha whose reading of chivalric romances convinces him to ride out as the knight Don Quixote. With the peasant Sancho Panza as squire, he attacks windmills, flocks, and inns, mistaking ordinary Castile for a landscape of giants and enchanted castles. Dukes, priests, innkeepers, and his own family attempt to bring him home. The second part finds the pair famous from the first book's print and caught in other people's jokes. It is a comic prose epic about delusion, friendship, and the collision of books with the road.
