Compiled in 1086 on the order of William the Conqueror, Domesday Book is a survey of landholding in England and some Welsh borders after the Norman Conquest. Commissioners recorded, shire by shire and manor by manor, who held the land in 1066 and in 1086, how many ploughs, villagers, slaves, mills, and meadows there were, and what the estate was worth. Great Domesday covers most of the country in summary; Little Domesday treats Essex, Norfolk, and Suffolk in more detail. The work is an administrative inventory for taxation and title, not a chronicle. This edition presents the record in English translation with scholarly apparatus.
