First published in 1957, this novel follows the physician and poet Yuri Zhivago from the last years of imperial Russia through the First World War, the revolutions of 1917, and the Civil War. His marriage to Tonya Gromeko is crossed by his love for Lara Antipova, herself tied to the lawyer Komarovsky and to the partisan leader Strelnikov. The action moves from Moscow to the Ural front and a remote town in the frozen interior, where medicine, foraging, and political suspicion fill daily life. Poems attributed to Zhivago close the book. It is a historical novel about private life under a revolution that claims every household.
