This novel is set in post-apartheid South Africa. David Lurie, a Cape Town university professor of communications and a scholar of Romantic poetry, has an affair with a student, is brought before a committee, and refuses the required public language of apology. He goes to his daughter Lucy's smallholding in the Eastern Cape, where a violent attack on the farm forces both of them into a new relation with their neighbours, including the former farm worker Petrus. The book follows Lurie's loss of status, his work at an animal clinic, and the question of what authority a disgraced white man still claims. It is a contemporary novel of sexual power and land.
