This selection of Dickens's essays and sketches, taken largely from the 1830s pieces later gathered as Sketches by Boz, describes London as a set of streets, trades, and amusements. Typical subjects include coaches and booking offices, gin-shops, private theatres, a parliamentary sitting, fairs, police offices, and the Sunday habits of different classes. The observer walks, rides, and loiters, recording dress, speech, and the look of crowds rather than following a plot. Later journalism of a similar kind is sometimes included. The volume is a portrait of the capital in short prose, not a novel and not a guidebook arranged as routes.
