This collected body of fiction comprises the long novels Dickens published from the late 1830s to the 1860s, from the club papers of Pickwick through Oliver Twist, the education and family sagas, the legal and prison books, to the later social novels set in London and the provinces. Recurring materials include childhood labour, debt, Chancery and crime, factory towns, and the gap between respectable households and the street. The books mix serial comedy, melodrama, and topical satire. There is no single plot. The set is the novel sequence of one Victorian career, read as separate stories that share a city and a moral climate.
