This collection gathers Charles Dickens's travel pieces, letters, and related sketches about continental journeys in the 1840s and 1850s. The extracts follow him through France, Switzerland, and Italy: inns, roads, Alpine crossings, Genoa, cities of the north Italian plain, Rome, and Naples, with remarks on poverty, ceremony, and the Catholic Church as he found them. Some pieces come from the travel book later called Pictures from Italy; others are letters and shorter narratives such as an account of an Italian prisoner. There is no single itinerary imposed as a plot. The volume is a sampler of Dickens as a travelling observer of streets, lodgings, and foreign crowds.
