Diary of Samuel Pepys
A New and Complete Transcription
By Samuel Pepys · 2003
Back to CatalogueThis diary, kept from 1660 to 1669, records the daily life of a rising Navy Office clerk in Restoration London. Pepys notes work at the office, plays, meals, music, his marriage to Elizabeth, and his own appetites and fears. Public events run through the same pages: the return of Charles II, the Dutch war, the plague year, and the Fire of London. The voice is private, abbreviated, and mixed with accounts and lists. The book is a first-person chronicle of a decade, not a later history of the Restoration and not a continuous memoir rewritten for print.
