Published in 1956, this James Bond novel sends the British agent to investigate a diamond pipeline that runs from African mines through London to the United States. Posing along the route, Bond meets Tiffany Case, a courier inside the operation, and follows the stones to New York and Las Vegas, where the Spangled Mob and its hired killers control the traffic. Gambling houses, a mud-bath killing, and a crossing of the country by road and rail occupy the middle of the book. The conflict is between Bond's assignment to smash the pipeline and a criminal organisation that treats the diamonds as ordinary freight. It is a thriller of smuggling and pursuit.
