After a hurricane wrecks the routines of a planter family in Jamaica, the Bas-Thornton children are put aboard a ship for England. Pirates take the vessel. The children, especially Emily, then live among Captain Jonsen and his crew, first at sea and later in a settlement on the Spanish Main. Adults on both sides treat the children as innocents to be protected or used; the novel watches what the children actually understand, desire, and do. First published in 1929, it is a sea story that tests period assumptions about childhood, race, and moral responsibility without treating the voyage as a simple rescue.
