This volume presents Edgar Degas through his own letters and notebook entries, together with reported remarks and the memoirs of people who knew him, set beside reproductions of his drawings, prints, and paintings. The writings cover studio practice, the Impressionist exhibitions, dealings with patrons and dealers, travel, and the later years of failing sight. He writes as a working artist about ballet, racecourse, and laundry subjects, and about the technical problems of pastel, sculpture, and printmaking. The book is a documentary self-portrait in words and images, not a continuous biography. There is no single plot: the order is roughly chronological across a long Paris career.
