Published in 1937, this detective novel places Hercule Poirot on a Nile steamer among a party of wealthy travellers. The central pair are the newly married heiress Linnet Ridgeway and her husband Simon Doyle, pursued by Jacqueline de Bellefort, the woman Simon left for Linnet. Other passengers include a novelist, an elderly busybody, a socialist, a doctor, and servants with reasons to watch the bride. When a shooting occurs on board, Poirot works from cabins, alibis, and the closed world of the boat as it moves between Egyptian sites. The book is a puzzle mystery about money, jealousy, and a crime arranged in public view.
