This anthology reprints early American comic-book stories from 1938 through the mid-1950s, when the publisher that became DC introduced costumed heroes. Typical pieces show the first appearances and early adventures of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, and related figures, still close to pulp crime and wartime plots. A replica of the Action Comics issue that first presented Superman usually stands beside later origin retellings and team stories. The book is a selection of Golden Age serial fiction in pictures and word balloons, not a continuous novel and not a history of the company.
