First published in 1940, this novel follows N.S. Rubashov, an old Bolshevik arrested by the party he served. In prison he is interrogated by Ivanov, a former comrade, and later by Gletkin, a younger official who wants a public confession. Rubashov reviews his past missions, the people he sacrificed for the cause, and the logic that the individual is nothing beside the Party. Between hearings he taps on the wall to a neighbour and writes in his mind about the grammatical fiction of the first person. The book is a political prison novel of the Moscow trials era, not a documentary of any one defendant.
