Published in 1876, this novel splits between two lives that meet in mid-Victorian England and on the Continent. Gwendolen Harleth, a handsome, self-willed young woman, gambles away her prospects and then accepts marriage to the wealthy, controlling Henleigh Grandcourt. Daniel Deronda, raised as an English gentleman of uncertain parentage, rescues the Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth and is drawn into the circle of the unwell visionary Mordecai, who argues for a Jewish national future. Deronda's search for his own origins runs beside Gwendolen's education in the costs of her choices. The book is a double plot of English county society and Jewish identity.
