First performed around 1610, this late romance is set in ancient Britain under King Cymbeline. He has banished Posthumus Leonatus for marrying his daughter Imogen against the court's will. At Rome, Posthumus wagers on Imogen's chastity with the Italian Iachimo, who travels to Britain and, by a bedroom trick, gathers seeming proof of her infidelity. Imogen flees in a page's disguise and comes among two young men living in the Welsh mountains, unaware they are her kidnapped brothers. A Roman demand for tribute brings an army onto British ground. The play is a tragicomedy of jealousy, lost heirs, and a war that forces private oaths into public view.
