First published in 1961, this history reconstructs the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746 and the repression that followed. Prebble follows Charles Edward Stuart's journey from the high point of the Forty-Five to the moor outside Inverness, where the Jacobite army met the Duke of Cumberland's government force. He describes the failed night march, the short action, and then the hunt for fugitives, the burning of glens, and the legal destruction of the clan system. The book is narrative history from the side of the men in the line, using soldiers' and civilians' testimony more than official celebration.
