First published in 1962, this detective novel introduces the poet-detective Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard. At Martingale, a country house in the Fens, the Maxie family have taken in Sally Jupp, a handsome unmarried mother who works as a parlourmaid and will not play the grateful dependent. After a village fete she is found suffocated in her room. Dalgliesh examines the household - the invalid Mrs Maxie, her son and daughter, a cousin, and the neighbours - and the social insult Sally offered by accepting a proposal above her place. The book is a closed-circle murder investigation.
