Synopsis

First published in 1879, this short novel is set at Llanfeare, a Welsh estate that the old squire Indefer Jones intends for his niece Isabel Brodrick. After his death a later will leaving the property to his timid nephew Henry Jones is found - or is said to have been found - and Henry, who knows of a document in a particular volume in the library, cannot decide whether to produce it. Isabel will not marry him to settle the claim. The book is a study of conscience and inheritance: a weak man, a disputed will, and a house that becomes a trap for both cousins.
