First published in 1974, this memoir is Jan Morris's account of living as a woman after being assigned male at birth. Morris describes a childhood sense of being wrongly placed, years as a soldier and travel writer under the name James, marriage and children, and the long effort to obtain surgery. The book moves between Oxford, Cairo, the Everest expedition she reported, and the clinic in Casablanca where the operation is performed. It is a first-person inquiry into sex, gender, and the public self, written as a traveller's report on a private crossing rather than as a medical case history.
