Conrad's Fate

In this Chrestomanci novel, twelve-year-old Conrad Tesdinic is sent from the bookshop in Stallchester to work as a servant at Stallery Mansion, high above the town. His uncle has convinced him that he is born with bad karma and must kill the person responsible before his fate destroys him. At Stallery he meets Christopher Chant, another boy posing as a servant, and the two investigate a series of reality shifts that keep altering the house, the weather, and the people in it. The novel is a comic fantasy about class, magic, and a hotel-like castle that sits on a weak point between worlds.
