This volume gathers the documents of Joseph Conrad's 1890 journey into the Congo Free State: the Congo Diary of the overland march from Matadi, the technical Up-river Book kept aboard the Roi des Belges, letters to family and friends, later correspondence with Roger Casement, and the short story An Outpost of Progress. The non-fiction records heat, sickness, porterage, and the casual brutality of the river stations. The story follows two European agents at a trading post who arrive full of civilizing talk and collapse. The book is a documentary companion to the Congo years, not a reprint of Heart of Darkness.
