First published in 1824 as The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, this novel has two tellings. An editor reconstructs the early-eighteenth-century feud between the moderate George Colwan and his Calvinist half-brother Robert Wringhim in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. Then Robert's own memoir describes his conviction that he is one of the elect, and his alliance with the shape-shifting Gil-Martin, who urges him to murder as a holy duty. The book is a double narrative of religious antinomianism, brother-hatred, and a companion who may be the devil or a projection of Robert's will.
