Written in the late fourth century, this spiritual autobiography addresses God in the second person while recounting Augustine's life from childhood in Roman North Africa through student years in Carthage, a career in rhetoric at Rome and Milan, and baptism. He examines theft, sexual attachment, Manichaean belief, and the death of his friend and of his mother Monica. The later books turn from narrative to memory, time, and a reading of Genesis. The work is both confession of sin and inquiry into how a mind knows God. It is not a church history but one man's account of conversion.
