Complete Tales of the Unexpected and Other Stories

This omnibus collects Dahl's adult short stories from the volumes Kiss Kiss, Over to You, Someone Like You, and Switch Bitch, with further tales written for television. Settings include English villages, wartime RAF messes, New York apartments, and tropical hotels. Typical plots turn on a bet, a poisoned gift, a marriage that is a trap, or a professional skill used for revenge. Narrators often sound reasonable until the last turn. The collection is comic and cruel rather than supernatural: ordinary people discover that a household object, an animal, or a polite conversation can finish a life.
