This volume reprints Sassoon's semi-autobiographical trilogy: Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Memoirs of an Infantry Officer, and Sherston's Progress. George Sherston grows up among Kentish hunts and cricket, then goes to the Western Front as an infantry officer. The middle book follows trench warfare, wounds, and his public protest against the continuation of the war, which the army treats as a medical case. The last book takes him through Craiglockhart, a return to France, and the closing months of 1918. First issued between 1928 and 1936, the work is a fictionalized memoir of sport, combat, and a soldier's refusal, told in Sherston's own voice.
