In the continent of Westeros, summer is ending and several houses contend for power around the Iron Throne. Lord Eddard Stark of Winterfell is drawn south to serve King Robert Baratheon and finds the capital a nest of Lannister interest, bastardy rumours, and assassination. Across the Narrow Sea, the exiled Targaryen heirs Viserys and Daenerys bargain with Dothraki horselords. On the Wall, the Night's Watch faces a threat from the far north that court politics ignore. The novel is epic fantasy told through shifting viewpoints, concerned with feudal loyalty, succession, and the gap between honourable conduct and survival.
