1066 and All That
A Memorable History of England, Comprising All the Parts You Can Remember Including 103 Good Things, 5 Bad Kings, and 2 Genuine Dates
By W.C. Sellar, R.J. Yeatman · 1990
Back to CatalogueFirst published in 1930, this short satirical history of England pretends to be what a schoolboy remembers of the subject. Sellar and Yeatman reduce kings, battles, and acts of Parliament to a string of Good Things and Bad Kings, with invented dates, mangled names, and test questions. The joke runs from the Romans through the Norman Conquest, the Civil War, and the Empire to a point at which history is declared to have come to a full stop. It is a parody of textbook certainty and patriotic recitation, not a narrative history meant to be used as fact.
