This multi-volume collection assembles Kipling's short fiction from the Indian sketches of Plain Tales from the Hills and Soldiers Three through later books such as Life's Handicap, Traffics and Discoveries, and Debits and Credits. Early stories treat the British army and civil service in India, hill stations, and the gap between official language and what soldiers and clerks actually do. Later pieces move to Sussex, the sea, machines, and wartime England, with occasional forays into fantasy and the uncanny. The range includes comic anecdotes, cruel practical jokes, and tales in which a landscape or a craft has its own laws. It is a body of stories, not a novel.
