This account of Oflag IV-C, the Saxon fortress used for Allied officers who had already escaped from other camps, covers the prison's whole wartime life rather than one man's breakout. Reid, who had been a prisoner there, describes the mix of British, French, Dutch, Polish, and other national groups, the internal order of the castle, the succession of escape schemes, and the German staff who tried to hold them. The narrative runs from the first arrivals to liberation. The book is a camp history, not a novel and not only a retelling of Reid's own escape.
