Flora Poste, a brisk London orphan of nineteen, descends on her Sussex cousins the Starkadders at Cold Comfort Farm. The household is a nest of rural gloom: Aunt Ada Doom, who saw something nasty in the woodshed and keeps to her room; the preacher Amos; the smouldering Seth; the doomed Elfine; and a farm that runs on mud, cows named Graceless and Aimless, and inherited misery. Flora, armed with a handbook of modern housekeeping, sets about tidying lives and livestock as if the place were a problem in domestic science. First published in 1932, the novel is a comic demolition of earthy regional fiction, watching one tidy mind collide with a family that prefers its curses.
