This novel follows two working-class families, the Pickles and the Lambs, who share a large ramshackle house on Cloud Street in Perth from the 1940s into the 1960s. After Sam Pickles loses his fingers and the Lambs' son Fish is damaged in a drowning, the households live in uneasy proximity: gambling and luck on one side, hard work and shopkeeping on the other. Quick Lamb, Rose Pickles, and the rest grow up in a house that seems to remember earlier inhabitants. The book is a domestic epic of postwar Western Australia: money, marriage, grief, and the slow binding of two families under one roof.
