First published in 1960, this fourth novel of The Alexandria Quartet returns the narrator Darley to Alexandria during the Second World War. He resumes ties with figures from the earlier books, including Justine, Nessim, Balthazar, and the artist Clea, and learns facts that reframe the love affairs and political plots already told. The city is blacked out and damaged; new episodes, including Clea's work and an accident at sea, shift the pattern of the previous three volumes. The book is both a continuation and a revision: the same events seen with more information, in Durrell's layered, multi-perspective design.
