Claudius the God
The Troublesome Reign of Tiberius Claudius Caesar
By Robert Graves · 1995
Back to CataloguePublished in 1934 as a sequel to I, Claudius, this novel continues the fictional autobiography of the emperor Claudius. He recounts his unexpected rule after Caligula's murder: the invasion of Britain, the management of the Senate and the freedmen, his scholarship, and his marriages, first to Messalina and later to Agrippina. Court intrigue, provincial government, and the problem of succession occupy the reign. The voice remains Claudius's own, pedantic and watchful, looking back on power he never expected to hold. The book is a historical novel of imperial Rome, not a modern biography, and it completes the life begun in the preceding volume.
