This general poetry anthology collects more than three hundred poems in English, ranging across roughly four centuries from the early modern period to the present. The selection, introduced by Carol Ann Duffy, mixes lyrics, sonnets, ballads, and longer pieces on love, death, war, landscape, faith, and ordinary speech. Major canonical names stand beside less obvious choices; the arrangement is not a schoolroom survey by movement but a reader's miscellany. Each poem stands alone. The volume's purpose is to present a large, varied body of verse for dipping into, not to argue a single theory of poetry or to tell a historical story in order.
