This set gathers H.G. Wells's principal scientific romances of the 1890s. The Time Machine sends a Victorian inventor to a future in which humanity has split into Eloi and Morlocks and then further toward a dying earth. The War of the Worlds recounts a Martian invasion of southern England and the collapse of ordinary life under heat-ray and black smoke. The Invisible Man follows Griffin, who learns to make himself unseen and turns that power against a village and then London. Some editions also include The Island of Doctor Moreau. Together the books treat time travel, invasion, and the misuse of laboratory knowledge.
