This book is Kenneth Clark's survey of Western art and civilisation, written from the television series of the same name and published in 1969. Thirteen chapters move from the survival of learning after Rome through Charlemagne, the Gothic church, the Renaissance courts, the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, the Dutch seventeenth century, the Enlightenment, and the industrial and revolutionary ages, ending in the early twentieth century. Clark treats buildings, paintings, sculpture, and music as evidence of what a society believed about man, God, and nature. The work is a guided chronological argument, not a catalogue: a personal map of European making and thought.
