This illustrated survey visits twenty-one cities at a moment of power or cultural ferment, from ancient Thebes, Jerusalem, and Athens through Rome, Constantinople, and the later capitals of Europe to Moscow, New York, and Sydney. For each place Hibbert describes streets and buildings, work and pleasure, rulers and crowds, and the arts the city produced at that peak. The chapters are separate portraits rather than a continuous urban theory. The book is a popular historical panorama of cities, not a monograph on planning and not a picture book without text.
