This novel retells Greek myth from the point of view of Circe, a lesser daughter of the sun god Helios and the nymph Perse. Unskilled in the gods' innate power, she discovers pharmaka, is banished to the island of Aiaia, and learns to transform her enemies, including sailors who land there. The narrative follows her dealings with Hermes, Daedalus, Medea, Odysseus, and the son she bears, and her effort to make a life outside Olympus. The book is a first-person mythic education story: a witch's training in isolation, mortality, and the cost of power among gods and heroes. It stays with Circe's island years rather than with the wider Trojan cycle.
