This volume selects from Marcus Tullius Cicero's letters and orations of the late Roman Republic. The speeches typically include courtroom defences and attacks and the great public orations against Catiline and, later, against Mark Antony; the letters, many of them to Atticus, his brother Quintus, and other senators, show canvassing, exile, the civil war between Pompey and Caesar, and household affairs. Together they record a novus homo's career as advocate, consul, and failed broker of the republic's last years. The book is a sampler of Ciceronian rhetoric and correspondence, not a continuous narrative history of Rome.
