This is Richard Barber's selection of early medieval chronicles and related Anglo-Saxon texts, typically arranged in three movements: the coming of the Anglo-Saxons, their lore and learning, and the fall of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. The material includes historical narrative, heroic poetry, and saints' lives in modern English translation. Readers meet the adventus and conversion, the world of Bede and the mead-hall, and the later shocks of Viking attack and the Norman conquest. War-leaders, monks, and kings appear through contemporary or near-contemporary voices. The set is an anthology of sources, not a single modern history of the period.
